Our Story: From Hat Battles to Luma Hats
The Struggle Every Parent Knows
If you’re a parent, you know the drill: you put a hat on your child, and within seconds it’s been pulled off and tossed to the ground. We had the same daily battle with our boys (Max and Luca). But with Australia’s extreme sun, going hat-free wasn’t an option!
Our Lightbulb Moment
Once our 2nd child became one, we realised the problem wasn’t our kids, it was the hats. They weren’t designed with little ones (or parents) in mind. So, on a sun lounger while on a family break, fed up getting up and down to put hats back on, we sketched an idea: a soft, comfy hat with a secure buckle that kids couldn’t just tug off - think a helmet, but in a bucket hat version! And because our two boys, Max and Luca, were the reason we started this journey, we combined their names to create Luma. A little piece of them is stitched into every hat we make.
The Story Behind Our Name
Luma is more than a brand. It’s named after our two boys, Max and Luca - the inspiration for everything we do. They were the reason we set out to design a hat that actually stays on. Every time we see other kids wearing Luma, it feels like their story lives on in each family’s summer adventures.
From Idea to Reality
Fast forward months of testing, prototypes, and real-life beach trials with our own family and friends, and Luma Hats was born. Our design-registered buckle keeps hats on, our UPF50+ fabric provides maximum sun protection, and every detail is made for comfort and play.
What We Believe
At Luma, we believe sun safety shouldn’t be a battle. Hats should be something kids enjoy wearing and parents can trust. That’s why we design with three values at heart:
